SATURDAY THEMEDAY: Origins Depth – The Music of Assassin’s Creed Origins

From the moment you start up the game, you recognize a familiar soundtrack, but one cannot quite place it. Familiar but different, that is what the soundtrack of Assassin’s Creed Origins is, this is completely in line with the entire game. A reboot of the franchise, familiar but entirely reworked. Assassin’s Creed Origins isn’t just stopping at the visuals, the story and the environment. No, the soundtrack is also entirely fitting to the age of ancient empires…

As all previous Assassin’s Creed games, Origins uses background music while the player navigates through the world. Sometimes during long lonesome drifter moments, you barely hear any music and the birds are all one can really hear. However, the moment combat is initiated, the music shifts from slow to bombastic and revolving music. All in style of the game, the environment and fitting in the game.

The soundtrack of Assassin’s Creed Origins consist from forty two tracks, written by composer Sarah Schachner. While no one knows how real Ptolemaic Egyptian music sounded, historians can make some assumptions. Because of this, Sarah Schachner merged both old and new styles of Egyptian music and the original game franchise’s music. This resulted in the soundtracks we currently experience in the game, making the total experience of the game as authentic as possible, while also trying to make it feel familiar.

To create the music of Assassin’s Creed Origins we hear in the game, Schachner used traditional instruments. The music score we hear uses instruments such as the Lute, the rattles, animal-hide drums, the Lyres and the Oud. This resulted in quite the recognizable Middle Eastern sounds, which she tried to change by running all of the recordings through a special Synthesizer. This resulted in the vibe of mystery which is perfectly fitting for the setting of Assassin’s Creed Origins. Not only is the Original Soundtrack perfectly in line with the previous games, it is also an ode to Egyptian and Arabian music. While the other games used music for its game, Origins is creating life with it. Due to the music Origins feels the way as we know how it feels: Raw, Realistic, Ancient and Mythical.

Sarah Schachner was asked to create the music for a game which will define a generation and a start. She delivered completely and for that, I want to thank her. You made this game the game I hoped it would be. Not only is the game near perfect, the soundtrack, ranging from ambient background to all out foreground battle music, is in my eyes the real game carrier. Without Sarah Schachner, this game would have felt entirely different, and because of her, we have a beautiful original soundtrack to enjoy beside the game itself.
