Ivar’s Opinion About Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

A game I have waited on for over two decades, a game I will love and a game which I will remember for the rest of my life. Welcome to my Odyssey.

Experience the journey of a lifetime.

The conference

I saw the conference of Ubisoft from the very beginning, which was a cringefest for the first five minutes. A damned dancing panda and a marching band from hell was almost enough to make me cry, and I don’t mean positively. All silliness aside, I think it is quite obvious I am not a fan of Just Dance by now. Luckily this was the only part I disliked of the entire hour and a half of games shown. It took them over an hour, and I almost wondered if Odyssey would even be shown, until, at the very ending of the conference, we met them; the heroes we are going to play in Odyssey, in an epic trailer of biblical proportions.

The odyssey begins

And what a blast that was. For over ten minutes my inner child was screaming and crying of joy. This game, this game right here, is the one I have wanted since I was 6 years old. And that is not a strange thing at all. Since I was very young I have visited Greek (Egyptian and Roman) expositions in dozens of museums and I have been fascinated by the Ancient Greek era since the very first moment I saw pictures of their temples and armor…

Fight not only from horseback or your own feet, now you have your own ship and crew to command! For Sparta!

Now we can experience the war between Sparta and Athens (the well-known Peloponnesian war) first hand. We also see the grandfather of our heroes, Leonidas, at the battle of Thermopylae during the war against the Persian Empire, which was about half a century earlier. Now I was already hyped for this game, as I organize my own Live Action War Roleplaying Events with a setting during the Ancient Era, but after seeing the trailer and gameplay I know that this game is literally a dream come true.

Is this Assassin’s Creed?

But as a writer for MyCreed I have a duty to uphold, I always have to ask myself: is this game an Assassin’s Creed game? And while the other authors say no, I am fully convinced this is a worthy Assassin’s Creed game. But why you might ask? Well, for me Assassin’s Creed has always been about one thing, and one thing only. Reliving the past via the Animus and experience epic adventures you otherwise would never be able to do. And that my dear readers, that is exactly what Assassin’s Creed Odyssey does. We will see mythological monsters, explore tombs of heroes death for a thousand years and venture a path even Hercules would be proud of. A journey worthy for the gods.

300 inspired battle animations and I absolutely love it!

To me, Odyssey definitely is!

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey might not be about the Assassin Brotherhood, or even the Templar Order for that matter, but it focusses solely on the thing all games have in common: creating a world in which we can experience the past first hand, and in which we can interact with the people from that era. While Assassin’s Creed’s name might focus on the well, Creed of Assassins, the franchise does not. The last game solely focused on that was Assassin’s Creed II, and even that one slowly shifted focus to other points.

The world is gigantic and beautifully crafted. Welcome back to the era of heroes and myths.

So for me Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is definitely a full fledged and worthy Assassin’s Creed title. A game worthy of playing, a game in which we will relive the past and interact with it. That for me is enough to say this game will be a GOTY. All I can say for now is: Welcome to the future by reliving the past.
