Ivar’s first reaction about Assassin’s Creed Origins

The moment I saw the first leaks of the brand new Assassin’s Creed, I was doubtful. I thought it was fake and we wouldn’t even see an Assassin’s Creed game this year. I am very glad I was wrong and ever since the first trailer was shown at the Microsoft conference, I was blown away. Now it is my turn to tell you my first opinion about the gameplay and setting of the newest part of our Assassin’s Creed family: Assassin’s Creed Origins.

As quite the XBOX fan, I have been since the original XBOX, I sat down behind my television to see the Microsoft conference at the E3 last Sunday night. And as a surprise we were shown Assassin’s Creed Origins as one of the first games to be playable in 4K on the Xbox one X and Playstation 4 Pro. The trailer looked amazing and I was instantly hooked, I just knew I have to get this game as soon as possible. The bigger the surprise was that we were immediately shown a gameplay trailer as well, which looked just as good as the trailer.

Egypt, I spent a week there a few years ago and went to Luxor. I have no idea if we will see this city in the game, but the setting is amazing. From what I have seen in the trailer and gameplay, Assassin’s Creed Origins perfectly shows us the Egypt of ancient times. I love how they went back more than 2000 years, during the time in which the last of the Egypt Empires is crumbling. It is a big bonus for myself that the era of the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks is one of my favorite ones, so I really look forward to see how this game will truly show us the environment and world of that time.

The (OPEN!!!) world looked gigantic and real, while the player can simply climb everything. The endless dunes of the desert, the Nile and the cities surrounding the river, the wildlife and above all, the lifelike animations and characters… It seems to me that this game will be the best Assassin’s Creed we have ever seen in the franchise. I am also very happy we will go back to the pre-gunpowder era. While I love guns in real life and have worked for the Royal Dutch Army, it is a very welcome chance of pace to finally go back to the times of spears, bows, arrows and swords.

I am also very curious how much ships will play a role in the game, the Nile is a big river, especially back in the ancient era, but I doubt we will see large battles on water. However, the trailer featured ships on the sea, and knowing the Egyptians had relations with the Roman Empire, we might just see some of them in the game in some way or another. I personally hope we will see an ancient Roman port in the game.

One thing which I am really hyped about is the fact we can finally use a real eagle in the game instead of some sort of super power “eagle vision”. I love how they incorporated the feature from Far Cry Primal (and the drone from Wildlands) and created this version. This is what, in my eyes, should have been Eagle Vision from the start, a real eagle to scout the world with. I am also very curious in how much the Hydra, and other creatures of mythology, will play a role. I am very happy Ubisoft shows a bit more fantasy with this part of the Assassin’s Creed saga, while still keeping the game very believable and real (and I admit, how cool would it be if Hydra’s and Minotaurs would have existed in real life).

After years I am ready to play a new Assassin’s Creed, and going to Egypt during the last years of the era of empires is exactly what the series needs. I won’t know if this game will be the best one yet, but I think that going back to the roots is the savior we need for the franchise. I know one thing: I can’t wait till I can play this game on the Xbox One X in 4K, and I advise all readers to try to get their hands on a 4K console or PC to play this game how it is meant to be played: Native 4K.
