[Blog] Assassin’s Creed II, The Ezio Collection final verdict

Assassin’s Creed II, what a sight to behold. A couple of years ago when I finished Ezio’s story, I was saddened because I thought I would never see him again. I was dead wrong. The moment I booted up the remake of the stories of Ezio and the music became apparent, I knew this was the moment I didn’t knew I had missed so much. A warm welcome by an old friend.

When the Ezio Collection was announced I was both excited as disappointed. But when I first booted the game, the disappointment was quickly turned around in even more excitement. Nothing felt as good as to relive the story of my long lost friend: Ezio Auditore da Firenze. For some just a character, for me someone to look up to when I was younger. And I mean that, Ezio Auditore was a character a lot of people wanted to be. He was a true hero to the people, a savior of the world, an Assassin.

When I started to do the missions with Ezio again, I felt like I was going back in time. But the graphics were the same as I remembered, which I remembered as very good. Now for fun I rebooted the old Assassin’s Creed II disc. The graphics were so outdated it is almost unplayable. In short; the remake is a vast improvement in terms of graphical quality. Ezio in Full HD, in my memories he always looked that good, but now he stood there, along with his companions. The details of their armor, weapons and the surrounding world. Textures which are vastly improved and gone is the ugly bronze glow which tattered the originals.

The gameplay however is absolutely not improved. To0 many times I have been killed because of still persistent bugs from the originals or simply faults in the controls. There is a reason the newer games have reinvented the controls and playing the remake makes it all the more clear that we should be very happy with the direction they took the controls in the newer parts of the franchise. This is a feature I hoped they would have changed, as the controls make or brake the game. It doesn’t take long to readjust to the old controls, but it feels very limited, even after playing for hours.

The story is exactly the same as the in original game, however in the remake we do see all the addons incorporated from the original games. Also the two short movies (Lineage and Embers) are added in the remake, so we get a full Ezio Auditore package all in one. In my opinion this is the best part of the package, a pass to play the entire story from beginning to end. For lots of players who have never played the addons, they will experience additional stories they have never played before.

If you are a fan of Ezio Auditore da Firenze I really advice you to buy this remake. For newcomers this gamepack is also the ultimate way to experience Assassin’s Creed in all its glory. Swordfighting, Castles and beautiful locations like Venice and Florence will make anyone really excited. All in all, I am happy to play this remake and I will continue to play further in Florence, Venice, Toscany and Monteriggioni.
