Blog: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Part II – Experience with Ivar

As stated in part my first impression wasn’t that positive about the state of the game. I will give some reasons for this, followed up by everything I actually liked. However later in the game, the game really gets a lot better and thus should be given a chance. I certainly loved the gameplay and the game looks beautiful.


I am a huge digger for open world games. One of the main reasons I loved The Witcher 3 so much. Luckily for me, no Assassin’s Creed has ever let me down in terms of size of the world or diversity. Until Syndicate. The world is huge, don’t get me wrong. There are loads and loads of side activities and missions. But in contradiction to the other games, every district looks the same. Partly because it is the same city, but also largely the result of the dark environment. This is one of the reasons I haven’t played the game as much as I have played for example Assassin’s Creed 3 or Black Flag. Which were in colors entirely different.

Another big issue is the difficulty of the game. Having played all Assassin’s Creed games I feel a little left out. I have the skills, I know how to play the game and expected something of a difficulty. Except that didn’t happen. Not even once, except for Quick Time Events, did I die. I played the game for 20 – 30 hours. Okay not dying in battles might be called an achievement for some people, but it really isn’t in this game. Especially later on you have so much health it seems like Assassin’s Creed 1 all over again. The game is simply too easy for seasoned Assassin’s Creed players. Missions are mostly failed due to stupid moves by both myself or the AI, or simply restarting to just get the 100% for a memory. However, trying to reach 100% synchronization can be more challenging, thus making you feel a moment of satisfaction when you have synchronized some of the more difficult missions on 100%.


All this being said, the game is far from a bad game. As it should be, the game world is both alive as it is gorgeous. It really feels like you have just entered London from late 19th century. The animations of the characters are great and the movement improvement from Unity (different buttons to climb up or down) is still in the game. While in my eyes Assassin’s Creed has always been about climbing and rooftop chases, it is a whole different story in Syndicate. Syndicate focusses mainly upon sneaking (Evie Frye) and Boasting/fighting (Jacob Frye). While the game only feels as an Assassin’s Creed game on certain points in the game, it is one of the best action adventure games I have played in a long time. I have personally given it the nick name: Grand Theft Carriage. Why? Because the game feels like a Grand Theft Auto or Watch_Dogs game set in the mid 19th century. And while this doesn’t really deserve the Assassin’s Creed name, it makes the game fun at moments you thought you were just starting to get bored.

Both Evie as Jacob have wildly different personalities and play entirely different, there is a lot of diversity in the game if you switch between both characters. It is fun to hear them argue of even the tiniest things and it really becomes obvious that they are Brother and Sister. However, late in the game, the playstyles come closer together due to maximizing the skilltrees. As I already said in part 1, the Rope launcher is badass. I look forward to using it in other Assassin’s Creed games. The revolver is also neat, but I primary used it for quick escapes. A big plus is the gigantic load of side activities and missions the player can take part in. Kidnap someone, kill a Templar, destroy a warehouse, free children from child labour or a chase on a moving train? Yes to all of them. Especially the main missions have some exciting action scenes.


There is also an entirely other London, set during the First World War. The London of this era is different, has other houses, factories, people and cars. I personally disliked the missions here due to historic inaccuracy, but I loved how they managed to create an entirely “extra” map.

While Syndicate isn’t the most thrilling adventure in the Assassin’s Creed universe and while it lacks a lot of difficulty and the iconic sword fighting, it still breaths Assassin’s Creed vibe all over the place. Sneaking? Check. Climbing? Check. Historic characters? Check. Templars and Assassins? Check. The main missions are fun but sometimes to easy, but overall I really enjoyed the game. While in my opinion London was to much of the same thing, I did enjoy the world and vibe it created. The time period is really neat and I myself hope we haven’t seen the last of the 19th century in the Assassin’s Creed universe. As an Assassin’s Creed fan I would recommend any other fan to play and finish the main story, as a lot becomes clear about both the Assassins as the Templars. Primary that there are heroes and villains on both sides…
